Decanter has shined a light on some of the most powerful people in the Champagne region – and they just so happen to be female. Anne Krebiehl notes that not so long ago the idea of a woman running a Champagne house “would have raised many an eyebrow in this traditional region.” Fortunately, times have evolved and this piece explores the philosophies of eight talented women including Champagne Ayala Chef de Cave Caroline Latrive.
Krebiehl shares details on Latrive’s experience and “obvious” decision to pursue a career in the wine industry. She also says of working at Ayala: ‘I was lucky to work for a house run by open-minded people who recognise your capabilities, qualities and competence rather than your gender.’
Today, Latrive tells the publication her top priority is to ‘enhance the expression of Chardonnay – my favourite grape variety – across our cuvées with the greatest respect for the house style’. She elaborates on the qualities necessary for someone to thrive in the field – noting passion and sensitivity. Lastly, she offers advise to other women looking to break into the world of Champagne: ‘Never let anyone discourage you, be passionate and invested, and most importantly be yourself.’
The story also includes a beautiful recommendation of the Champagne Ayala Le Blanc de Blancs 2013. One of our favorite lines of the review says “the palate comes in on very light feet – on tiptoe, in fact – but rather than mouth-puckering lemon, you get ultra-light, exquisite creaminess that almost has an edge of lemon oil, bedded on soft, gentle autolysis. A picture of elegance and lightness.” Read the full story HERE
