Vivino published an account of the 2021 harvest in California, highlighting notes from Chateau Montelena Winemaker Matt Crafton. The general consensus in Napa is that it was a dry season with low yields, but fantastic quality. As far as Montelena is concerned, it has been one for the record books!
Crafton adds, “Thus far, harvest 2021 has been fantastic, except for the yields which have been quite low. For me, and for Montelena, these are the vintages we absolutely love,” he says, noting that in low-yielding vintages, everything comes down to “harnessing the right skillset to capture this year in the glass. Some see a lack of hangtime, I see a diversity of flavor. Others see high acid, I see ageable wines. The ingredients are the ingredients. It’s our job to take them to the next level.” Read the full report HERE
