Robb Report contributors Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen wrote a beautifully informative article about wines produced in Italy’s Bolgheri region, listing Le Macchiole’s Messorio as one of the crown jewels of the region, along with Ornellaia.
The piece explores the origins of how wines from Bolgheri, originally labeled as “table wines,” have since emerged as some of the most outstanding wines available in the market. Interestingly, the writers note that Le Macchiole is the only estate in the region that was started by a native – Eugenio Campolmi.
Le Macchiole Messorio, which is 100 percent Merlot fruit, was actually one of the first single-variety wines produced in the region. The writers had the opportunity to taste through a couple recent vintages, noting “the 2013 shows arresting intensity of dark fruit with anise and black olive notes; it clearly has another 12 to 15 years of drinkability ahead. The opulent 2015 has flavors of black cherry, cassis and coffee bean, while the 2016 shows refinement and restraint.”
Continuing, they speak about Ornellaia and how each vintage represents the qualities of the growing season and finished wine. “Ornellaia 2018 La Grazia Bolgheri Superiore is named for the “balance of symmetry, proportion and harmony” of the vintage. A blend of mostly Cabernet (40 percent) and Merlot (51 percent), it’s intense in the mouth, with flavors of dark plums, anise and hillside herbs.” Read the full story HERE
