First taste: Bollinger PN VZ 15 – first new cuvée in over 10 years

Decanter featured the launch of Bollinger PN VZ15 in a dedicated story, highlighting how it is the first new cuvée to join the House’s permanent range in over 10 years. Yohan Castaing explains “The mission statement was quite simple and direct: create a blanc de noirs Champagne made with just Pinot Noir, which has long been the emblematic grape variety for this house.” He also adds that “in this choice, there is a nod in the direction of its iconic cuvée Vieilles Vignes Françaises (VVF),” though the new release is more accessible.

“PN VZ 15 with PN for Pinot Noir, VZ as an abbreviation for the Verzenay grape source and 15 for the base vintage.” Verzenay was selected for the initial blend because 2015 was very warm and the vines from this village “struggle less in hot years” as they benefit from northern exposure and limestone rich soils.”

He provides a great overview on the process and background on creating this new wine, and awards it with an impressive 94 point score – a true honor for a non-vintage wine.

PN, made entirely from Pinot Noir to underscore the very essence and DNA of the House style, is the first new cuvée added to Bollinger’s permanent range since rosé in 2008. Each release of PN, developed as a series to bring Bollinger’s unique vision of Pinot Noir to light, will showcase a different cru from the base year that highlights its distinctive terroir and taste. The first edition of the series, PN VZ15, explores the interpretation of Pinot Noir from Verzenay 2015 and features reserve wines dating back to 2009.

Bollinger is one of the rare Grande Marques that’s still family owned. Known for its rich, elegant and polished style of Champagne, their outstanding wines are the result of rigorous attention to detail and incredibly labor-intensive practices that few houses are willing to undertake. Underscoring its excellence, Bollinger has remained British secret agent James Bond's Champagne of choice since 1973.
