Juvé & Camps
Penedès, Spain
Juvé & Camps is an indisputable worldwide leader of Spanish premium sparkling wines. This family-owned, 100% estate-based producer is revered in Spain for its painstaking focus on quality and sustainability, and its important role within the country’s conversation on fine wine in general.
A winegrowing family for over 200 years, Juvé first started producing sparkling wines under their name in 1921.
Juvé also has a powerful history in the United States. The father of fourth generation and CEO Meritxell Juvé (or “Txell”, as she is known), Joan Juvé, spent decades traveling across the globe building the awareness of Juvé’s quality wines. Juvé has had important success and sales in the U.S. market for decades, and continues to represent the majority of Gran Reserva sold in the country.
Juvé & Camps farms its 700 acres under a certified organic regime (likely the largest producer entirely certified as such in Spain), hand harvests all grapes, and ages their cuvées on lees for an impressive 36-42 months yielding creamy, fine and complex age-worthy sparkling wines.
The flagship wine “Reserva de la Familia” (translating to ‘Reserve of the Family’) is a leading Spanish sparkling wine in the world, always vintage-dated, and all the more notable because of the quality needed to produce it without dosage (‘Brut Nature’ designation). Juvé & Camps also produces a Brut Rosé made 100% with Pinot Noir. It was originally developed for the United States and has seen a growing success ever since. At the top of the pyramid is the prestige cuvée called “Gran Juvé”, a specific and limited expression of their best plots with even longer aging (42 months) that showcases the intensity and complexity that Spanish sparkling wines can achieve.
If you have visited Spain, you have seen with your own eyes the prevalence of Juvé & Camps. It is not an exaggeration to call it a national institution.

Reviews
Juvé & Camps Brut Rosé Pinot Noir NV (91 WA)
-
"The NV Pinot Noir Brut Rose, a non-vintage sparkling wine from Pinot Noir grapes, which is quite dark-colored, displays a bright cherry red color with a showy nose of cherries, truffles and strawberry jam with a fresh, pungent palate, balanced acidity and flavors. Different, with a strong personality. It feels like a red sparkling wine, and quite good, by the way! I'd have it with some charcuterie. Juve & Champs is a very popular Cava producer in Spain, which seems to have improved its range and added a few luxury cuvees to their range while also moving to organic farming practices."
Juvé & Camps Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva 2016 (91 DE)

"A classic Cava blend of Macabeu, Xarel-lo and Parellada; bready, citrus aromas with hints of honeyed peach and white blossom. Fresh, with a creamy mousse and persistent bubbles. Beeswax, ripe lemon citrus, stone fruit and candied peel, alongside savoury, yeasty notes. Very satisfying."

Toni Cantos, Head Winemaker
"It’s easy to understand why Antoni (Toni) Cantos would become a winemaker. He was born in Vilafranca del Penedès, in the heart of the oldest wine region of Spain, the Penedès. A small city 40 miles southwest of Barcelona, surrounded by vineyards in all directions. Toni’s father was a renowned consulting winemaker and would often take young Toni into the various cellars when checking on the wines. Checking the pH, the evolution of the aromas, and tasting wines is something that he learned years before he attended college. By the time Toni graduated as an Agricultural Engineer, followed by a graduate degree of Enology and a Master of Enology Research, he was set to continue the Cantos family legacy.
Cantos joined Juvé & Camps in 1997, and he currently leads a team of winemakers. Juvé & Camps focuses on Gran Reservas cavas, which must be aged for a minimum of 30 months. Toni stresses, “The quality of the grapes is always important, but when you age a cava for three or four years, it’s crucial. The base wines must have the balance and complexity to withstand the long ageing; only then the result is complex, elegant cavas that still maintains the freshness and fruit flavors. Selecting the top-quality grapes is the only way you can get to that endpoint”. Juvé & Camps large organically farmed estate (670 acres) offers Toni more control over the grapes, allowing him to cherry-pick those blocks that exhibit the characteristics needed for the extended ageing. Every harvest poses a new challenge, but Toni feels the challenges are getting more extreme as the climate changes. “As the new century rolled in, the variation of weather patterns in Penedès has been notably more dramatic, as a winemaker is important to be nimble and adapt to the ever-changing conditions. At Juvé & Camps we are committed to sustainable practices and organic farming as a way to contribute to ameliorating climate change.”
Like most young kids from Vilafranca, Toni joined the deeply rooted local tradition of the “Castellers de Vilafranca.” A group of amateurs of all ages who build human towers several stories high while challenging other towns’ groups. “My time as a casteller taught me about team-work, patience, and perseverance to overcoming challenges,” Toni claims, “all values that I use every day as a winemaker.” Although his years as a casteller are in the past, he still follows their performances closely, especially now that his son is part of the Castellers de Vilafranca. Toni has taught winemaking at his alma matter and other centers; he is the past president of the Catalan Association of Enologist and a current member of the tasting panels of DO Cava and DO Penedès. Toni and his family live in Vilafranca del Penedes. An avid birdwatcher who enjoys history and traveling, but above all, exploring restaurants and discovering new cuisines.
Meritxell Juvé, CEO
Meritxell Juvé grew up surrounded by vineyards, playing among wine racks and hiding in wine cellars. Although she never felt pressured to be part of her family business, she came to realize, after working in other industries, she could not stay away from the winery and her family’s legacy. After graduating with a Business degree and an MBA from ESADE Business School in Barcelona. Txell (short for Meritxell) moved to Singapore where she developed an understanding of the Asian markets that she would later translate into the growth of Juvé y Camps export sales.
In 2011, Txell returned home to join the family business, holding several key positions and travelled extensively to promote and build the brand internationally. While completing a Master’s degree in Enology, Viticulture, and Wine Marketing from Mercè Rosell’s Institute. In 2015 under Txell’s leadership, she certified all the family vineyards (close to 700 acres) as organic by the European Agency CCPAE. Making Juvé & Camps one of the largest organic estates in Spain. Txell also worked closely with the winemaking team to create new styles of both cava and still wines to complement their successful portfolio. In 2016, Txell Juvé became J&C Prime Brands’ first woman CEO. Completing the generational transition that the company had been preparing for quite some time. Txell represents the fourth generation to manage the family-owned estate and is committed to upholding the brand’s legacy and ethos of quality and prestige. Another bold move by Txell was to diversify and evolve Primeras Marcas. Juve & Camps, importer of fine wines and spirits business, by expanding their En Premieur category. Txell, was able to source from the most coveted Bordeaux producers for both private and commercial collectors. Primeras Marcas is Spain’s largest En Premieur importer and exclusively represents brands such as, Petrus, Louis Roederer, Louis Latour, Leon Beyer, Gaja, and many more noteable estates in Spain. In 2018 J&C Prime Brands achieved their dream and acquired Pagos de Anguix, a rare 215 acres of Tempranillo vineyards in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Which frames this classic estate to produce some of the countries most sought after, complex red wines. The first investment outside of the Penedès. J&C Prime Brands is the holding company of: Juvé & Camps (Cavas, Penedès), Propietat d’Espiell (Still wine, Penedès), Pagos d’Anguix (Still wine, Ribera del Duero) and Primeras Marcas (importer and distributor).
Growing up in her father’s footsteps meant being in and out of award-winning restaurants. Which gave Txell an appreciation for food and wine from a very early age. She enjoys cooking at home and tasting first hand the latest culinary craze in her hometown of Barcelona. Txell Juvé currently resides in Barcelona with her husband, a New Zealand transplant, their young daughter, and dog Bacchus. In her precious spare time she enjoys the outdoors, arts, learning new languages and exploring different cultures.
